1. INTRODUCTION
Ballina Basketball has a rich and vibrant history in its representative program, dedicated to helping players reach their full potential and compete as a team, regardless of the score. We hope all players feel a sense of pride representing the Ballina Breakers and uphold the values of respect, accountability, and integrity.
Much of the success of the Ballina Basketball Representative Program is due to the contributions of dedicated volunteers and the commitment of players and families.
2. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the Ballina Basketball Representative Program include:
- Enhancing the skills and performance of players, coaches, and referees.
- Building unity within teams and across the association.
- Foster athlete development.
- Strive for open and effective communication with all participants.
- Providing a supportive environment to enable high-level performance.
Key Program Aspects:
- Emphasising fundamental skill development.
- Encouraging a strong work ethic and a positive attitude.
- Developing a commitment to the team, association, and personal growth.
- Promoting enjoyment and a love for basketball.
3. PLAYER SELECTION
The Representative Program aims to help individual players improve while achieving team success.
Selection Criteria:
- Ability to compete at a high level.
- Performance at trials.
- Dedication, coachability, and attitude.
- Potential to contribute to team success.
- Commitment to the association and team ethos.
Team Composition:
- Teams generally consist of 10 players. Coaches, in consultation with selectors, may adjust team size as needed.
- Reserves may be selected to train and play when required.
Eligibility:
- Players must be registered with Ballina Basketball and play in the local Ballina competition.
- Players must attend trials or provide valid reasons for absence.
4. PLAYER RESPONSIBILITIES
Players represent Ballina Basketball both on and off the court. Responsibilities include:
- Respecting coaches, teammates, referees, and opponents.
- Committing to training and games with a positive and hard-working attitude.
- Displaying sportsmanship and avoiding inappropriate behaviour.
- Fulfilling local competition commitments.
Court Time:
Court time is at the coach’s discretion, with a focus on development and performance.
5. PARENT GUIDELINES
Parents are essential to the success of the program and are expected to:
- Support the team, coach, and association positively.
- Refrain from sideline coaching or negative comments.
- Follow the parent inquiry process for any concerns.
- Participate in required activities, such as bench duty.
- Parents are required for Bench Duty during rounds and finals for representative games, with each team providing 2 bench personnel. Managers will create a roster to ensure that bench duty is shared equally among parents.
Parent Inquiry Process:
- Wait 24 hours after an issue arises – This cooling-off period helps to ensure that concerns are addressed thoughtfully and with a clear perspective.
- Discuss concerns with the coach privately – Parents should approach the coach directly to discuss any issues in a respectful and constructive manner, away from players or other spectators.
- Escalate unresolved matters to the Representative Coordinator if needed – If the issue cannot be resolved through direct communication with the coach, it may be brought to the attention of the Representative Coordinator for further review and resolution.
6. FUNDRAISING AND SPONSORSHIP
Fundraising and sponsorship help offset costs. Guidelines:
- All activities must be approved by Ballina Basketball.
- Uniforms and branding cannot be altered without permission.
- Anyone interested in sponsoring a representative team or the association please contact Ballina Basketball.
7. FEES AND EXPENSES
The Representative Program fees include:
- An upfront fee covers training/game fees and Basketball NSW administration.
- Additional costs for travel, training, uniforms and tournaments are an additional cost.
- A “No Pay - No Play” policy applies, with financial hardship considerations available upon request.
8. TRAVEL
Travel arrangements include:
- Carpooling or private transport for games.
- Team accommodation for away weekends, typically organised by team managers.
- It is preferred that teams stay together to enhance bonding among players both on and off the court. Managers can assist with these arrangements.
9. TRAINING
Commitment to training is essential for success. Requirements include:
- Attending training sessions assigned by your coaches.
- Arriving on time with the proper gear.
- Communicating with coaches about absences or injuries.
10. UNIFORMS
Players must wear approved Ballina Basketball uniforms during games and training. Uniforms include:
- Games: Playing singlets, shorts & warm up top (borrowed uniforms will be collected by the manager at the end of each weekend and returned to the rep coordinator at the end of the season).
- Training: Game singlet or Ballina Basketball training reversible. Any shorts can be worn at training, although game shorts or Ballina training shorts are preferred.
- Optional Ballina Basketball merchandise is available for purchase.
11. TEAM MANAGER
Team managers play a critical role in coordinating communication and logistics. Responsibilities include:
- Enforce Ballina Basketball and Basketball NSW rules and regulations.
- Organise parent roster for bench duty.
- May assist in collecting, washing, and distributing uniforms when away.
- Complete the tablet/scoresheet before games (coaches may also help with this).
- If needed, organise travel, accommodation, and inform parents of booking details.
- Assist with the distribution and promotion of information to the team/parents
- Report injuries to the coach and rep coordinator. Online injury report form must also be completed by the athlete (below).
- A team manager will be responsible for players of the team during weekends, inclusive of organising accommodation/meals and general wellbeing. At the venue, managers are responsible for ensuring players are on time and in the correct uniform. Once players commence training and playing on the court, they are the responsibility of the coach.
- During games, the manager sits at the end of the bench and ensures all players receive their drink bottle when coming off and makes sure water bottles are filled. Athletes are responsible for keeping the bench tidy, including bags and ensuring all jewellery is off prior to warm up.
- Provide a valid Working with Children Check.
