Meet the Committee
Kris Davis - President
Kris Davis started his basketball journey at the age of 15 in Mackay. Over the years, he has had the fortune of playing, coaching, and working with various clubs across Australia, including in Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, and New South Wales. Although he retired from playing at the young age of 27, Kris couldn't stay away from the game for too long and made a comeback just last year. In addition to his extensive basketball experience, Kris has also gained valuable insights from his involvement in AFL, which he aims to leverage in his current role to strengthen BBI.
Kris’ background in teaching and his current role as a fire fighter have equipped him with the leadership skills necessary to enhance development at BBI. His patience, problem-solving abilities, integrity and communication skills are significant assets to our association.
With nearly a decade of committee experience, Kris is dedicated to building a robust association at all levels. His vision for BBI focuses on providing development opportunities for players, coaches, and referees, ensuring growth and excellence across the board.
Kris lives by the mantra, "Don't keep me behind a computer; put me out in the field - that's where I'll make a real impact.” He believes in hands-on leadership and being actively involved in the basketball community.
If you see Kris around the stadium, please reach out and say hi.
Zoe Chardon - Vice President and Interim Treasurer
While Zoe doesn’t have direct basketball experience, she’s been involved in soccer as a player, coach, and referee. Her interest in basketball developed through her children's involvement in the sport. Watching how basketball positively impacted their lives, Zoe developed a deep appreciation for the game.
Zoe believes that everyone deserves an outlet where they can have fun and develop lifelong skills through sports. Her goal for this committee is to promote a welcoming environment that encourages participation and personal growth for both kids and adults, ensuring basketball becomes a positive force in our community.
Her Mantra?
Every challenge is an opportunity for growth; every setback is a stepping stone to success.
Angie van Dommele - Secretary
Angie’s passion for basketball spans more than three decades. She has left her mark on the court. From her beginnings at Lismore Lakers Junior State League as a player, assistant coach and referee. Her commitment to the sport was evident from her early days at the North Coast Academy of Sport, as a North Coast High School representative, and member of the open women’s Lismore Stars. Moving away from Ballina, and venturing into senior leagues Angie’s passion only intensified playing in various leagues over the years including, Brisbane CBA, Darwin Division 1, GBL and the Intensity Super League on the Gold Coast. Despite the inevitable slowing of pace on the court, Angie’s commitment to basketball remains, as she continues to play socially in the BBI senior women’s comp.
But Ange’s expertise doesn’t stop on the court. With more than 26 years in marketing, communications and administration, she brings a wealth of knowledge to her role at BBI. Her innovative thinking and commitment to improving processes make her an invaluable asset to our team.
Ange’s vision for BBI is clear: to foster a safe, inclusive culture and make our association the ultimate destination for basketball enthusiasts in our community.
Her mantra? Leave things better than you found them.
Next time you spot Ange at the stadium, don’t hesitate to say hi.
Jared Devers - General Member
Jared’s basketball journey spans five years of junior competition with the Vermont Vultures in Melbourne, followed by several seasons of seniors in Sydney. Now, he’s eager to join a Ballina Division 2 seniors’ team for the winter competition, extending an open invitation to anyone in search of a player!
His involvement with the BBI committee marks Jared’s first into sports club administration. Motivated by a desire to enhance opportunities for girls’ basketball in Ballina, Jared actively sort a role within the committee. His eldest daughter’s withdrawal from the sport, partly attributed to being in a boys’ team with only one other girl, underscored the need for improved programs. Thankfully, his youngest is a keen player in our NEJL under 14 girls’ team and is keeping the dream alive!
Jared advocates for the realisation of Basketball NSW’s strategic goal of 40% female participation, a target yet to be met in Ballina, where only 24% of members are female, lagging behind the state average of 28% (2021).
Securing adequate court space remains a persistent challenge for the club. While BISC offers an amazing venue, its two courts must accommodate multiple sporting codes including volleyball, netball, futsal and pickleball.
Additionally, our girls’ team are conducting training sessions at Southern Cross School due to the prohibitive booking fees. In contrast, neighbouring Lismore Basketball enjoys the advantage of a dedicated facility, enabling round -the-clock basketball activities. Jared envisions a future where the Ballina Breakers have their own home, or access to additional courts, thereby alleviating capacity limitations and allowing more growth.
