North Eastern Junior League/Northern Junior League

NEJL (Division 1) and NJL (Division 2) is the premier competitive representative basketball competition for junior players across the North of New South Wales.

The Division 1 competition brings together the best representative teams from associations from Tweed in the North to Newcastle in the south and west to Tamworth. In the past rounds have been hosted at Ballina, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and Tamworth.

The Division 2 competition brings together representative teams from associations from Tweed in the North to Port Macquarie in the south. In the past rounds have been hosted at Ballina, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie.

Both divisions require extensive travel by families. Carnivals are a 2-day event often requiring over night stays on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Main Event of the Junior Representative Basketball Calendar

For all players, NEJL/NJL is the premier experience of representative basketball in the Northern regions.

It provides an opportunity to:

  • Represent Ballina Basketball against other associations.

  • Develop individual and team basketball skills.

  • Learn the expectations of representative sport.

  • Build confidence competing against players from across the region.

  • Continue their basketball pathway towards NSW representation.

Age Groups 2027

Ballina Basketball fields at least one team in each division and may field an additional development team. Ballina Basketball is committed to providing teams of all ages to compete in all boys and girls divisions.

  • U12 – Players born in 2016, 2017 or 2018

  • U14 – Players born in 2014 or 2015

  • U16 – Players born in 2012 or 2013

  • U18 – Players born in 2010 or 2011

Age groups are determined by year of birth - not date of birth. 

How the Competition Works

North Coast Shield is played through a series of weekend carnivals hosted by participating associations throughout the season. Players are expected to organise their own accommodation and travel to all events.
